Benefits of Mirrors

The mirror is one of the most easily obtained, beneficial pieces of wall decor a person can invest in. There are small mirrors, tall mirrors, wide mirrors, oval mirrors, mirrors with scalloped edges and so many, many more. They are among the more practical of home accessories. In fact, some interior designers have gone as far as saying that home decor simply isn't complete without a mirror or two. Of course, some people are wondering whether they are any actual benefits to having a mirror as part of their home accessories and decor.

Increasing Lighting

One of the biggest and absolute most important benefits of a mirror by far, is the increase in natural light that a room will receive. This is because the mirror, whether it be a large oval mirror over the fireplace, or a smaller rectangular mirror near a doorway, will reflect any light that comes into the room during the day.

This reflection creates additional light and of course, who doesn't love extra natural light? It should be noted that this concept also applies to artificial lighting (such as lamps) during the evening. The mirror will also reflect the artificial light, helping to light the room in the darker hours of the evening or early morning.

Increase in the Room's Size

Okay, so a mirror won't actually increase the overall size of a room. However, a mirror can help give the appearance of a larger room. This is because the mirror reflects the room, giving the appearance of more space.

If positioned right, the homeowner could also reflect an outdoor view. This gives the illusion of an additional window, extra light and of course, gives the impression of a larger room.

Either way, the addition of a mirror into a room, no matter what the homeowner chooses to reflect, gives the illusion of more space simply due to the reflection.

Hiding Imperfections

Another huge benefit of installing a small or large mirror is that it can be used to hide imperfections in a wall. For example, an old nail hole or a scratch in the paint. Simply hang the mirror over top and voila, the flaw is gone!

Personal Use

Of course, it goes without saying that a mirror can also be used for personal needs. For example, if you're heading out to a romantic dinner with your husband, you can use a large mirror in your living room to do a quick final check before heading out the door.

Focal Point

Last, but not least, if you've been struggling with creating a focal point, consider using a large mirror. A mirror will draw attention to itself for many reasons. Not only does it create the illusion of a larger room. It also, as mentioned above, reflects natural light.

A mirror doesn't have to be large to make a statement. You can group together several different mirrors of varying sizes or styles to make a statement.

These of course, are just a few of the many, many benefits a mirror can offer.
